01 / ARTIST IDENTITY
Dimitrios Bitzenis is an independent Greek composer, songwriter and music producer from Thessaloniki. His artistic journey began in the late 1970s with Proxies, a group that became part of the city's alternative rock and post-punk scene. As founder and performer, he contributed to a musical world in which guitars, synthesizers, rhythm and original songwriting were allowed to meet without fixed boundaries.
The band's early albums, including Groovin’ over Beirut (1983), form part of an evolving body of work that continued through changing sounds and production technologies. Bitzenis later developed a substantial independent repertoire, with musical works documented through Safe Creative registrations dating back to 2012.
His practice embraces composition, lyrics, arrangement, instrumental performance, recording and production. In 2017, this creative activity also gave rise to freeSongs, a platform built around his original music. Yet the starting point remains the same: the artistic decision to make, shape and share a piece of music.

For the .ART Award, the story of creation is as important as the finished recording.
For me, a composition begins with an idea worth following: sometimes a melody, sometimes a rhythm, a lyrical phrase, a harmonic movement or simply a musical question. The first task is to find its character. Each decision that follows — arrangement, structure, instrumentation, dynamics and sound — should make that character more distinct.
Across the years I have moved between performance, recording and different generations of music technology. The tools have changed, but I remain interested in the same questions: what makes a song recognizable, why a particular transition creates emotion, how a voice or instrument affects the identity of a piece, and when an arrangement finally says enough.
Documenting these decisions is part of documenting the work itself. Drafts, lyrics, session files, recording notes and published registrations can help reveal the journey between an initial idea and its final sound. This artist archive brings those steps together, alongside the music that grew from them.
